Data Viz Approach
Going into this dataset, I had an idea of what I would find in the data. I thought I was going to see a higher number of the key positions - the playmakers like QB and RB - go in the higher rounds. Well, I was wrong, the positions are pretty well spread throughout each round. That means, that the viz that I had envisioned also wasn't going to work. So, back to the drawing board for the most part. I knew that I still wanted to focus on the trends tied to the different positions, I just wasn't sure how I wanted to visualize it.
After spending some time thinking about it further, I decided to use a hybrid of BANS and Bars showing key metrics for each position as well as the number of players drafted by position by year. Still hung up on my wrong idea about where positions go in the Draft, I wanted to provide visibility to that as well To accomplish that, I used set actions and clever calculated fields to use a modified asymmetric drill down. This allows the viewer to click on a year and view the Draft details for the selected year by round.
Where a typical asymmetric drill down would keep all of the other years and only bring in the round for the selected year, I wanted to be sure to highlight just the selected year. I'll go into more detail with regards to the calculations on my other blog later this weekend, but click around and explore the interactivity!
We'd really love to see what you can do with this week's dataset! Download the data and see what you can visualize. Create your viz and post your work to Tableau Public and Twitter with the hashtag #ThrowbackDataThursday, tagging @TThrowbackThurs. We're really looking forward to seeing what the Tableau Community can come up with!
This week's dataset comes from the Pro Football Reference. Please be sure to cite the source on your viz.
